Remember Edward Snowden? Remember how upset the American people were when he released classified information exposing how the NSA illegally spied on citizens? Well, apparently that’s okay now, because libertarians are terrorist insurgence, and we need the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2021 to stop them.
At least this is the case according to John Brennan. The former CIA Director spoke to MSNBC, where he tacked libertarians on to the end of his domestic terrorism concern list alongside authoritarians, fascists, and racists. The irony seems to have gone largely unnoticed.
If congressional democrats get their way, all of the war-powers granted to alphabet agencies after September 11, 2001 will be turned inward on the American people. They seem to think that the damage done at the Capitol on Jan 6, 2021 was equally as devastating. Congressman Brad Schneider and eight colleagues introduced the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2021, while expressing their outrage of recent events they compared to the tragic attacks of 9/11:
“After 911, our government correctly took bold steps to defend American lives against foreign terrorism, and prevent another attack against our nation. Yet, during this time, we overlooked the ever-growing threat homegrown domestic terrorists posed to American lives,” said Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46). “As the legislative branch of our federal government, we have a duty to support the efforts of our public safety, police, and national security agencies. This legislation gives out nation’s defenders the tools they need to find, arrest, and prosecute individuals in our society intent on harming their fellow Americans.”
Thankfully, there are voices that may reach a little further than the modern political echo chambers. Former Democrat presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard has been speaking out against this idea, recently stating:
“It’s so dangerous as you guys have been talking about, this is an issue that all Democrats, Republicans, independents, Libertarians should be extremely concerned about, especially because we don’t have to guess about where this goes or how this ends,”
This move is clearly political. In a stunt to both garner support as well as distract the average citizen, the DTPA is full of references to White Supremacists. In fact, each directive of monitoring and reporting is directed at the suspicion of “domestic terrorists including white supremacists.”
In other words, the definition of domestic terrorism is still susceptible to revision and justification that has nothing to do with white supremacy at all. In fact, it could just as easily be directed at any form of political opposition that may dare impede their agenda.
Consider this: your worst nightmare for president becomes a reality. Do you want them to have this power over you? The FBI, Homeland Security, and Department of Justice all operate under the executive branch. All of this power is being centralized into one branch of government, with hostility towards it’s own citizenry.
