Police have discovered a van full of explosives in Philadelphia. This discovery follows nights of violence and looting throughout the city after the police shooting of Walter Wallace Jr.
A curfew has been put into effect, although Fox News TV report police have been told not to arrest looters. These two policies are clearly at odds with each other.
Investigation into the van full of explosives is underway, and it is currently unclear what the intent was. We do know from videos on social media that police have been targeted during the unrest.
One officer was ran over in a hit and run.
Riots and unrest follow the police shooting of Walter Wallace Jr. Police say they are set to release the body cam video as well as 911 call from the incident soon. The Independent reports:
The police allege Wallace had a knife that he refused to drop. According to Philadelphia police spokesperson Tanya Little, Wallace “advanced towards” two police officers, who then fired at him “several times”. Some witnesses have also said that Wallace was carrying a knife, though this isn’t clear from the available video footage.
We have voiced our support for police reform and accountability. However, we have also been very clear that the actions of BLM and Antifa are more than counterproductive and cannot be supported. This type of public violence will only lead to increased militarization of the police and regular use of the National Guard as a police force. Furthermore, the economic devastation of these events especially during the economic lockdown attributed to COVID19 will reverse any possible public support.
