Fake ballot boxes have been appearing across three counties in California. These drop boxes have been admittedly distributed by the California GOP, and have prompted allegations and investigations into voter fraud.
We have previously reported on illegal ballot harvesting tied to the Democratic party, so when this story surfaced it definitely caught our attention.
The Republican Party is in fact utilizing these drop boxes to their benefit. Initial suspicion could inquire if this is to discard ballots in a heavily democratic area, but as reported by the New York Times, these boxes are being placed in strategic conservative areas:
The dark gray metal boxes have been popping up over the past two weeks near churches, gun shops and Republican Party offices, mostly in conservative areas of a deep-blue state, affixed with a white paper label identifying them as either an “Official Ballot Drop off Box” or a “Ballot Drop Box.”
Rep. Harley Rouda has taken to Twitter to warn voters of these “illegal” boxes and urging voters to not use them. The claim that they are illegal however isn’t necessarily true, as California Democrats pushed for law changes in 2016 that allow for mail in ballots to be turned over to third parties. The law change reads:
“However, a vote by mail voter who is unable to return the ballot may designate any person to return the ballot to the elections official from whom it came or to the precinct board at a polling place within the jurisdiction.”
Republican Party spokesperson Hector Barajas highlights this law which the republican party has been critical of. The Guardian reports:
“In California, where you can have convicted felons and individuals with a criminal history go door to door and collect ballots from voters, Democrats are now upset because organizations, individuals and groups are offering an opportunity for their friends, family, and patrons to drop off their ballot with someone they know and trust,” Barajas said in the statement.
“The Democrat anger is overblown when state law allows organizations, volunteers or campaign workers to collect completed ballots and drop them off at polling places or election offices.”
Nevertheless, the Orange County District Attorney has launched an investigation into the situation.
It is certainly understandable to be concerned about the use of these boxes. It is also understandable to use these boxes as a means to highlight concerns with a lack of ballot harvesting laws. Although overall, utilizing these fake ballot boxes is a poor way to make a point professionally, yet an epic trolling operation expected from the likes of 4chan.
