Dr. Fauci funded coronavirus research in Wuhan. Despite your blatantly false facebook fact checkers urging you to believe this is a conspiracy theory, it is a documented fact.
Before we get started, there are a few things that need to clarify.
The virus that is the cause of the pandemic is sars-cov-2. The illness related to infection of sars-cov-2 is what is called COVID-19. Coronavirus itself is a strain of the common cold. The current strain is a mutation of coronavirus as well as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome.)
In 2014 the Obama Administration issued a directive halting “gain-of-function experiments involving influenza, SARS, and MERS viruses. Specifically, the funding pause will apply to gain-of-function research projects that may be reasonably anticipated to confer attributes to influenza, MERS, or SARS viruses such that the virus would have enhanced pathogenicity and/or transmissibility in mammals via the respiratory route.”
Gain-of-function is a term used in reference to a mutation that create new or enhanced activity on a protein. This increased activity leads to increased transmission and potentially increased severity of viral infections.
ScienceMag documented expressed concerns from the scientific community at the time in regards to this type of research.
“Three years ago, two separate research teams revealed that they had made a version of the H5N1 avian influenza strain that spread between ferrets. Many scientists worried that if the potent new lab strain were accidentally or deliberately released, it could result in a deadly pandemic. Proponents argued that such studies will help public health researchers detect an impending flu pandemic and prepare vaccines.”
Despite these concerns about the dangers of such research, in 2017 the National Institute of Health (NIH) reversed course on this decision, resuming funding into gain-of-function research. Just as before, this research specifically dealt with influenza, SARS, and MERS viruses.
More recently, it turns out that Dr. Fauci was actually funding additional gain-of-function research specifically related to bat coronavirus. This funding was through scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as well as other locations.
Newsweek reported in April of 2020,
“In 2019, with the backing of NIAID, the National Institutes of Health committed $3.7 million over six years for research that included some gain-of-function work. The program followed another $3.7 million, 5-year project for collecting and studying bat coronaviruses, which ended in 2019, bringing the total to $7.4 million.
Many scientists have criticized gain of function research, which involves manipulating viruses in the lab to explore their potential for infecting humans, because it creates a risk of starting a pandemic from accidental release.”
So it is a clear and documented fact that the NIAID and NIH has an extensive history of controversial gain-of-function research. Dr. Fauci funded coronavirus research performed at the lab in Wuhan. Wuhan is where the pandemic originated from. These are not conspiracy theories, these are facts. What does all of this add up to? That is a decision you can make for yourself.
