Facebook election meddling played a far more prominent role in 2016 than Russia hacking, and they have no intention of stopping.
A screen shot was sent to me by a personal source regarding Facebook offering a payment for account deactivation at the end of September. Accounts are to be suspended for a period of one to six weeks, and the survey inquires about a satisfactory payment that would be accepted by the user.
Being 53 days out from the 2020 Presidential Election at the time of this writing, there are only 7.57 weeks remaining. A 6 week deactivation later in this month is a direct correspondence to the election time frame.
Currently, social media platforms such as Facebook are the only real source for independent news to be accessed by the average person. Alternatively, people are relying on social media as a platform to find their news. By deactivating accounts for a financial incentive, people will alternatively turn to politically controlled narratives.
Television media is mostly controlled by the same handful of explicitly partisan networks. Those same networks control the majority of the local outlets as well. Google is now the worlds largest censor, leaving people who distrust the mega-box news corporations relying on word-of-mouth.
In today’s world, and even more so in the unjustified coronavirus lockdown, word of mouth is done over social media. Even with fake fact checking addendum, articles are able to be circulated and instill critical thinking. (Unless you’re Infowars, then you’re simply banned altogether.)
Despite their best efforts, social media platforms have not been able to completely silence and sway opinion of their political opponents. So it appears that the next move in Facebook election meddling is to simply pay you to log out when it matters most.
