Now that the CDC has revised the numbers for deaths caused by sars-cov-2, or coronavirus, the continued lockdown that we have been forced under for the last 6 months cannot be allowed to continue.
It has been reported that only 6% of deaths listed as COVID-19 were attributed to the virus without any other comorbidity. A comorbidity is a condition that is potential lethal, but may or may not be attributed to the cause of death. Of the various underlying conditions, my personal favorite are the 5,133 attributed to “Intentional and unintentional injury, poisoning and other adverse events” which includes homicide, suicide, etc and most obviously have nothing to do with the virus whatsoever. Out of the remaining 94% of reported COVID-19 deaths, there were an average of 2.6 comorbidities per case signifying that those who were affected either died of something completely unrelated or were already of high risk for any illness due to poor health conditions.
With such a reduction in the mortality of the virus, any further continuation of the lockdown is a known detriment to not only the economy, but the lives and well being of millions. Suicide rates are rising, increasing domestic violence and substance abuse, and deteriorating general mental health are all very real consequences of our reaction to the virus.
Additionally, Market Watch reports that a devastating 55% of businesses on Yelp have closed permanently.
Furthermore, the World Food Programme of the United Nations has warned of soaring starvation in the poorest parts of the world as a direct result of COVID-19’s economic impact, increasing the global death toll by a staggering estimated 121 million. That is a lot of lives to sacrifice with a current global death toll for COVID sitting at 848k according to Google at the time of this writing, which doesn’t take into account the revisions of statistics for a more accurate reflection.
In the end, no matter what your view is on social distancing, masks, or the virus itself – one thing cannot be debated: The damage being caused by economic shut downs and restrictions are far more devastating than the actual virus itself. This continued lockdown must be stopped.
